Though she's come a long way, Britney Spears -- who kicked off her Femme Fatale tour in San Jose, Calif., on Thursday -- is still under her father's conservatorship and that won't likely change until at least the end of this year, RadarOnline reports. "The conservatorship won't be ending this year because everything is going well," an insider tells the website.
In 2008, the singer's very public mental health breakdown famously resulted in her business affairs being placed under the legal control of her father, Jamie. The same inside source tells RadarOnline that "Britney is very comfortable with having the conservatorship in place. Is it ideal? No, but she now knows how fragile her mental health is, and that her dad Jamie, truly only wants what is best for his little girl."
The U.S. leg of Spears' tour is set to last through August, followed by a planned European tour and perhaps a tour of Japan. All of this would have to be signed off on by the judge in charge of Spears' conservatorship.
Spears' new album, Femme Fatale, has put her back at the top of the charts, and recent performances at the Billboard Music Awards and Good Morning America have done wonders to rehabilitate her flagging reputation. With a seemingly stable relationship with longtime boyfriend Jason Trawick and her focus on her mental health, Spears seems to be getting back on the right track. And, the insider tells RadarOnline that the conservatorship is key to keeping her on that path.
"The worst thing that could happen is that it ends, and Britney reverts back to her old ways, that would truly gut Jamie," says the source. "The conservatorship will end when Britney is ready. She is making progress, this is the second tour that she has done in the past three years. These tours wouldn't have happened if Jamie hadn't stepped in and taken control of his daughter's life."
